Wrestling is a dying art in WWE
Caught NXT last night and what a jumbled mess of a show it was. Much like an episode of Lost we got some answers to the format but overall it was hard to tell what exactly was going on. A bunch of "pros", or guys already on either roster, are saddled with a "rookie", or a guy who's been down in FCW (WWEs farm league) but what we dont know is why. One of these rookies is gonna end up on the main roster but how? WWE isnt telling us yet it seems. Last night was just a bunch of introductions.
All i took away from the show when seeing this new batch of talent is that WWE is doomed in the future. If this is what theyre gonna pass off as the future of the buisness then they need to seriously wipe everything clean and start over. The only two potential stars i saw were Bryan Danielson and David Ortunga. Danielsons treatment was a welcomed surprise. It seems somebody in the back has the internet and checked out what Danielson has done and all the talk thats been swirling around since it was announced The Miz was his pro. Right at the start of the show they addressed it and used it to advance him as a character. Good. It wouldve been utterly dumb to ignore a guy who is as decorated as he is like theyve done to so many before. Plus it cuts out half the job of developing a character for him. Got the internet? Google Danielson and see what theyre talking about. Now all WWE needs to do is fill in the blanks with a rounded out personality and they may have something. In truth, i dont see Danielson lasting long in WWE land.
Will he make it past NXT? With the way they talked him up last night it seems so. Much of the focus seemed to point towards a future fued with The Miz after he makes it to a roster but after that i seem him lingering in mid card hell then future endeavored. Simply put Danielson is not nor will he ever be a WWE wrestler. He is short as a motherfucker. Possibly only taller than Rey Mysterio and hes not in WWE shape whatsoever. Hes a very very plain guy. Simple trunks, kinda soft in the mid section and i dont see him becoming a personality anytime soon. In WWE terms he doesnt have that all important IT factor they crave so much. His stature being his one of two major drawbacks.
Sure he can be built up as a submission machine but how in the hell can he be expected to get cattle mutilation on the likes of HHH? Not gonna happen. Perhaps if WWE still had a legit cruiserweight division i could see him sticking around but Vince hates little people. Unless of course they get over with the kids like Mysterio and Hornswoggle do. In short (heh get it?), Danielson is a Benoit. Short on personality but excelent in the ring who was great in ROH and could maybe thrive in TNAs X Division but wont last long in WWEs male modeled prefer establishment.
On the opposite end of the spectrum is David Otunga. Who is a male model, has personality to a degree, and will fit in perfectly with the Cenas and Battistas of the world. He is exactly what Vince gets boners over. Does it matter if he can wrestle? Not really. With everyone shouting about charisma and personality last night its very clear Vince is no longer in the wrasslin buisness and with guys like Sheamus winning world titles he hasnt been for awhile. WWE is all about characters and Otunga is a character. Hes been on tv. People know him and hes comfortable talking. On the plus side hes built like a tank so hes a shoe in for a extended contract. Enough said.
All of the other rookies look and act like jobbers. Not one stood out to me. Heath Slater looks like he needs his ass kicked and acts like a doof, and the black guy Otunga fought looked really bad losing in under two minutes. The only saving grace to the segment was the always awesome CM Punk. Who really should be the one mentoring Danielson. Theyre evenly matched and have fought dozens of times. Danielson could also get the rub by being a member of Punks Straight Edged Society but thats me being all logical again.
Other than that its jobber city in NXT and if it wasnt for Danielson id stopped watching instantly. Its that bad. My prediction is simple. Otunga gets the contract unless Danielson gets a vocal enough fanbase to get him over. In either case Danielson fueds with the Miz the whole season and eventually gets his revenge.
TNA is tomorrow and all i got to say is Thank Lou Albano (god).
