NXT week 2
Caught the show last night and it was yet again another clusterfuck. I cant understand how a company with all of their resources and money could produce such a poorly scripted, terribly shot show. Theres no pacing and they try way to hard to cram as much as possible in an hour.
Not to keep tapping that ECW ass but it once again serves as a major example in doing so much with so little. The shows would only broadcast in Philly and NY on local sports networks and while it did look low budget u never got the sense that u were watching amatuer hour. Things were shot well and tight, and each episode had structure! NXT lacks all of this and its hurting the show.
Matt Striker quickly ran down the rules of how the Rookies r gonna be judged and he hinted at a elimanation style show. Yet nothing was said as to how and when this judging was gonna happen. Instead we got more random match ups most of which didnt make sense.
Otunga had a horrible showing last night against the same dude he fought last week and beat in mere minutes. This time things were different. The other dude (whose name i dont wanna remember) dominated most of the match. Two things stood out in this match. One, WWE has no sense of consistancy. It makes no sense to match up two guys in a rematch where the doofy looking one lost in minutes with one move and have the doof dominate the match. It makes Otunga look weak and like he got lucky last match. Two, the doofy one with bad buckwheat hair cant fuckin wrestle. His move set is basic, and the only expressions hes capable of is smiling at the crowd, and lookin confused otherwise. Basically he looks and acts like a shithead. He'll be goin nowhere.
CM Punk was once again stellar last night as he looked at the doof in utter shame and anger. Who can blame him? Hes gotten saddled with maybe the worst guy on this roster and him playing up the fact that he wants nothing to do with him makes this guy work somewhat.
I hated Otunga fighting with his Pro R-Truth after the match. It sets up Otunga as a heel (Truth is a face) but we're already doing that with the Danielson/Miz combo. Perhaps its to set up Truth and Miz switching Rookies mid season or some other plan but i didnt see it as needed.
Speaking of Danielson, it looks like hes gonna get the scrappy underdog treatment to get him over. Not good. Its a short term plan thatll lose steam if he wins a contract. The idea should be to make him a personality not force one on him. His opponent last night Wade Barrett did look good despite it though. The dudes big as hell and had a good showing with Danielson going all bump city for him. Having world champ Jericho as ur pro dont hurt neither. Barretts smug attitude falls right in line with Jerichos and hes clearly another guy Vince could be high on. All thats missing is a better match to showcase how much this guy could go.
The main event tag match showed off two more jobbers thatll probably get futured endeavored in two years. Matt Hardy looks fat and more useless than ever. Seriously what happend? I know hes had a very up and down career but he looked like a schlub last night. Hes back into his gypsy styled Hardy Boyz pants and his gut sticks out almost as much as mine. He used to be great but its becoming obvious he needs to either take a long break and repackage himself or quit all together. William Regal on the orher hand looked stellar. Hes trim and fights like a mad dog. Why WWE wont get behind him as a top mid card heel is beyond me. In the last three years hes been going out there and doing his job and doing it quite well. He may not be main event material but thats no reason to short change him. He can be a solid worker to get ur up and comers over on either brand.
As for their Rookies its yet another case of too fast too soon. Justin Gabriel is a good potential cruiserweight champion. If WWE still had that division and cared about small guys. When r these guys gonna learn? If ur under 250 and not over six feet tall Vince doesnt care about u. Dont ask me y. Ask:
Brian Kendrick
Paul London
Jamie Noble
Charlie Haas
Matt Bourne
RVD
And etc.
Guys who got all the talent but not the Batista look. Sadly for little Gabe he looks and dresses like AJ Styles little brother. Therefore he'll go nowhere.
Skip Shefield despite having a shitty gimmick (it says cornfed on his tights) and a dumbass name (seriously Skip?) could have a minor career. Hes a pretty built guy and seems fast. Not too tall really but hed be a perfect second fiddle in a tag team. Kinda like an Arn Anderson type. Saddle him up with someone whos got more personality and is on the thinner side and he might get somewhere.
The most awkward appearence goes to Heath Slater and Christian having a tough manly work out together. I mean really? REALLY? This wasnt needed took up too much time. Heaths another idiot no ones gonna care about and i want him dead. DEAD!!!
Most awesome appearence goes to Carlito who interuppted a interview, ate an apple and spit it at Heath. I seriously think this needs to be a weekly segment. Id watch every week. I mean i do anyway but id actually look forward to it.
